Categorisation of Farmers according to Legal Notice 639.10

What is Categorisation?

The categorisation of farmers and livestock breeders establishes an official system through which agricultural holdings are classified according to their level of economic activity. This system is used as a tool to better understand the real contribution of agricultural holdings within the sector and to ensure that policies and support schemes are designed in a more targeted and transparent manner.
The categorisation is based on the Standard Output (SO) of the holding, which reflects the average value of its agricultural production. The system distinguishes between non-commercial holdings and commercial holdings, with the latter being further classified into various categories according to their economic size.

The regulatory framework provides for:
• Non-commercial holdings, which generate a Standard Output of less than €4,000;
• Commercial holdings, which are holdings with a Standard Output of more than €4,000.
